"7 Simple Steps to Basic Search Engine Optimization"

Lesson #2: Choosing Your Keywords - Part 2 of 2

OBJECTIVES:
1. Be able to define what keywords and key phrases are
2. Understand why keywords and key phrases are important for search engine optimization.
3. Select and rank keywords and phrases for your web site optimization.

In part one of this lesson, you created a basic list of keywords and phrases for your search engine optimization (SEO) campaign. In this part of the lesson we'll take your basic list and expand upon it. Finally, you'll create a finalized list by prioritizing your keywords and phrases.

"How do I make sure I have all the right keywords for my site?"

How people search is as individual as they are. Thus, the words you select as your keywords may not be the best words, or the only words, that your target audience is using.

In this step, you'll utilize online tools and software to improve upon your basic list. All the referred sites offer free or demonstration versions of their tools and software. However, some will give you just a sampling of the results you'd receive as a paying user. If you find you'd like to get the complete results, please refer to the details of each site to learn more.

IMPORTANT: Third Person, Inc. is not affiliated with, nor does it benefit in any way, by referring you to any of the sites listed in the following action step.

ACTION STEP:

1. Make sure your list includes the as many variations of your basic keywords or phrases as possible. Type a keyword or phrase from your basic list into any of the following tools. The tool will look for similar search terms. From the results provided, add the most popular or relevant keywords and phrases to your list. Here are some keyword research tools to try:

          • Google Suggests
          • MSN Keyword Group Detection
          • Wordtracker

2. Steal keywords and phrases from your competitors.
(OK - it's not really stealing, but you'll feel sneaky none-the-less.) These tools let you determine the keywords and phrases your competitors are ranking for. Add any relevant terms to your own list.

          • SEO Digger
          • Compete
          • Keyword Spy

3. Misspelled versions can be important.
Even though your third grade English teacher might cringe at the thought, people don't always use correct spelling, especially for internet searches. Ensure you're getting all the traffic you can from search engines by including misspelled version of your keywords and phrases in your SEO. The following tools will help you determine the most common misspellings of your important keywords and phrases.

          • MSN Keyword Mutation Detector
          • Wordtracker

4. Not all keywords and phrases are equal.
Your target audience may be much more likely to search "carpet cleaning services" than "steam clean carpets." The following tools will help you determine how often various terms are searched and by whom. Use this information to prioritize the keywords and phrases on your list.

          • MSN Keyword Forecast
          • Wordtracker
          • Keyword Discovery (Trellian)

5. List your products, services, or informational offerings.

CONGRATULATIONS!

You now have your complete listing of keywords and phrases. We'll use this list in the next lesson, "Page Titles."

***************

Key Terms:

Keywords and Key Phrases:  The words or phrases typed into search engines by your target audience when trying to find products, services, or information similar to what your web site offers.
