"7 Simple Steps to Basic Search Engine Optimization"

Lesson #1: Know Your Audience

OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify your target audience.
2. Define what products, services, and information that they're
trying to find with the assistance using search engines.

IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE

For our first lesson, we're going to start at the very beginning... namely identifying your target audience.

"What is a target audience?"

A target audience is defined as a group of individuals, businesses, or organizations who share one or more identifiable characteristics or needs. Members of a welldefined target audience generally respond in a similar and often predictable manner to marketing and advertising messages.

Depending on the business goal(s) for your web site, your target audience could be the customers who buy your products or use your services, the investors who loan you money, the reporters who will publicize your business, or the employees who fulfill on your offer.

Simply put, a target audience is the people who will ultimately make YOU successful.

"How do I identify the people in my target audience?"

Think about the cheapest mail order viagra business goal(s) for your web site. The people or businesses that will help you achieve that goal most likely have certain characteristics or demographics in common.

Describe these characteristic. They can include job titles, number of employees, industry, income or annual revenue, location, age, gender, home ownership, number of children, employment status, etc.

ACTION STEP:

Write down these key characteristics, and keep it handy. You'll need to refer to this information often as you optimize your site.

DEFINE WHAT YOUR AUDIENCE IS SEARCHING FOR

Everyone searches with a purpose... to find an answer to a question, get more information about a particular topic, or buy a product or service.

To successfully optimize your site, you'll need to know what your target audience is searching for. After all, you don't want to waste your time and money optimizing your site for a term like "purple monkey" when your audience is searching for "blue giraffes."

ACTION STEP:

The best way to determine what your target audience is searching for is to simply ask them

Questions to ask could include:
• What are you looking for when you use search engines?
• We provide (service/product) online. Do you ever search for such (services/products)?
• If so, how would you search for (service/product)? What search terms might you use?
• Do you currently use (service/product)?
• What is your experience with (service/product)?

Be sure to take notes when you talk to your target audience. The information you're going to get is priceless, and, more often than not, will be helpful for more than just search optimization. You'll also need this information for the next lesson, "Choosing Your Keywords."
