Your Business Marketing is So Much More than Just Advertising

While teaching the Entrepreneur Training Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Small Business Development Center, I'm continuously trying to make students recognize that their marketing is critical to the cheap cialis soft success of their businesses.

In this week's class (which was all about marketing a business — researching ones' industry, competitors and target customers in order to plan the product, distribution, pricing, etc.), some students pulled me aside to ask me what they should do if they couldn't afford a lot of advertising for their start-up. Could they still be successful?

Their concerns made it clear how synonymous the terms marketing and advertising have become in today's business world.

But - make no mistake about it —marketing and advertising are not the same and any business that treats them as if they are synonymous is heading for trouble.

In truth, marketing is so much more than advertising.  Marketing is the term used to describe the entire process of promoting, distributing and selling a product or service. This includes:

  • Monitoring your industry for trends and potential opportunities
  • Researching your competitors to find a niche for your own business
  • Knowing your target customers as intimately as possible through exhaustive demographics and psycho-graphics research
  • Pricing your product/service to maximize profitability
  • Getting your product/service to your customer as cost-efficiently as possible (could include selling through wholesalers, direct mail,  television infomercials, retail outlets, door to door sales, sales distributors, etc.)
  • Garnering publicity of your products/services through appropriate media outlets
  • Providing customer support systems to get and buy viagra cheapest retain customers
  • AND promotional advertising to make sure you potential customers know you exist.
