The real story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer -- An 'Unsung' Marketing HeroThe "Most Sung" of the Unsung Marketing Heroes

ROBERT L. MAY - CREATOR OF RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER

Since it's the holidays, we thought it appropriate to kick off a new column, featuring marketers who've made an impact on your life, with the creator of Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

In 1939, Montgomery Ward department stores wanted a new way attract shoppers into their stores during the holiday season. They'd had success previously giving away coloring books to kids. So, they turned to their internal copywriter, Robert May, to create a Christmas version of a coloring book.

What May came up with was a holiday version of "The Ugly Duckling" featuring an unusual reindeer with a red nose. The name, Rudolph, was chosen from several possibilities by his young daughter, Barbara.

Between 1939-1946, Montgomery Ward distributed over six million copies of the very popular coloring book. Despite the doxycycline online pharmacy without prescription popularity, May received no additional compensation for the piece since he created it as a Montgomery Ward employee and had no claim to the copyright. In 1947, however, May persuaded Montgomery Ward's president to transfer copyright ownership to him.

With the copyright, May began publishing books in 1947, and a short animation of the story was created in 1948. It was in 1949 though that Rudolph was cemented into our holiday culture when Gene Autry, a very popular country western signer at the time, first recorded the song we all know and love. Over two million records were sold within the first year.

In 1964, the claymation television cartoon version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" first aired. It is now the generic cialis and viagra combo longest consecutively running television special of all time.

So, the next time you sing the holiday classic, remember that our beloved Rudolph was created by an in-house marketing copywriter.
